TUTORIAL: DIY Headset Press

By Ben Butterfield • Mechanics • 30 Nov 2011

1. BUY THE PARTS

A) 1 x M12 Threaded rod at least 30cm long
B) 3 x M12 nuts
C) 4 x M12 square plate washers
D) 2 x Adjustable Wrenches

2. ASSEMBLE THE LOWER PLATFORM

First you need to assemble what will become the lower platform. Once you have put everything together as shown below, you should tighten the nuts against each other so the platform doesn’t move around when you are using the tool.

3. USING THE TOOL

Now that you have the bottom platform in place, it’s time to use the tool to press the headset cups into your frame. It’s best to do one cup at a time, to avoid any alignment issues. Thread the headset press through one of the cups and then through your frame. Fit the remaining washer and nut and tighten until you feel the cup flange hit the headtube.

As you can see, the headset cup in this picture does not fit the headtube. For a more complete tutorial on how to use this tool, take a look at ourĀ TUTORIAL: HOW TO REPLACE A HEADSET.
